Our ChurrosFresh, delicious and authentic!
Churros are traditional Spanish desserts developed centuries ago by Spanish shepherds. Up high in the mountains, fresh baked goods were impossible to come by, so the ingenious, nomadic folk of the hills came up with a delicious cake-like, cylindrical, daily staple which they could easily cook in a pan over an open fire. This was the birth of Churros.
The 'Churro' got its name from the Spanish shepherds which saw a resemblance in their Churra sheep. Originally churros were about the size of a breadstick, and they were eaten plain or rolled in cinnamon sugar.
In Spain, churros are still a very popular breakfast, snack or dessert. It was only a matter of time before churros traveled to South America and other Hispanic countries and communities, eventually making their way to North America.
Toro Churro is proud to be on the cutting-edge of the hot, new trend towards Spanish culture and cuisine. It’s the first eatery in New Zealand to adopt delicious churros as its signature dish. We’ve aptly called our signature churro, the Toro Churro, and we know you will love it as much as we do!
Toro Churro introduced in New Zealand
Sretco Nenadic is an Engineer by profession and worked with Fisher and Paykel for fifteen years.
When he was made redundant after the company moved most of its operations overseas.
He took a trip to Melbourne and saw a churro stall with long queues of customers waiting to buy churros.
He wondered if it’s something he could replicate in New Zealand. As an Engineer, he developed his own machine that can produce churros.
Toro Churro started in June 2010 and operated from one fixed location in Queen Street, Auckland Central, three mobile food trailers stationed in the night/day markets in Botany, Onehunga, Papatoetoe, Otara, Pakuranga, Mt Wellington, Silo Park CBD Takapuna, Auckland University Campus.
In May 2015 Toro Churro was bought over by Rajesh K Thakkar an entrepreneur, whose past experience in the bakery business of 10 years and his retail food business since 14 years in three major cities in NZ, has expanded the business to 12 food trailers and 3 fixed outlets and yet expanding.
We also cater to private events like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and corporate events. One of our other major event in which we participate is WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) held once a year in New Plymouth.
